MIROS aimed to understand the effects and mechanisms of antioxidants on several pregnancy and infant outcomes (preeclampsia, restricted or excessive fetal growth and the early indicators of programming of type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disorders). From 2006 to 2008, the study recruited approximately 300 healthy women who were 24 to 28 weeks pregnant, bearing a singleton fetus from three hospitals in Montreal, Quebec (Canada). After the baseline visit during their second trimester of pregnancy, mothers were followed up during their third trimester, and mothers and their infants were assessed at birth, three months postpartum, and 12 months postpartum.
