The Miyama Study investigated the rate of bone loss in an ageing population in rural Japan. The study recruited participants aged 40 to 79 years from Miyama Village in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. At baseline in 1990, over 1,500 people were included in the study. Four hundred participants were selected from the baseline cohort for follow-up, with 50 men and 50 women from each age decade. Participants were followed up in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2005.
