The MMHS study is a prospective cohort study investigating the relationship between mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk. The study involves 19,924 women aged 35 and older, recruited from Mayo Clinic sites in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, United States of America. Participants were enrolled between 2003 and 2006 after undergoing routine screening mammograms at Mayo Clinic facilities. The cohort consists exclusively of women with no prior history of breast cancer at the time of enrollment. Participants are followed up annually through linkage to medical records and cancer registries to monitor health outcomes, particularly breast cancer incidence.
