The WHO MONICA initiative aimed to understand cardiovascular disease trends and their determinants. The Catalonia cohort of WHO MONICA included over 5,000 participants from Bages, Berguedá, Solsonés, Vallés Oriental and Vallés Occidental (province of Barcelona) in Spain, aged 25 to 67 years in two cohorts. Over 2,500 Cohort 1 participants completed the baseline data collection in 1986 and were followed up until 1998. Over 2,900 Cohort 2 participants completed baseline data collection in 1990 and were followed up until 1999.
