The MONICA study examined the dynamics of cardiovascular disease rates and risk factors from the mid-1980s to at least 10 years later across various countries. MONICA Kaunas consisted of four samples of individuals randomly selected from population registers, aged 25 to 64 years living in Kaunas, a Lithuanian city. The MONICA-1 sample (2,743 participants) was examined between 1983 and 1985, the MONICA-2 sample (1,858 participants) between 1986 and 1987, the MONICA-3 sample (1,367 participants) between 1992 and 1993, and the MONICA-4 sample (1,423 participants) between 2001 and 2002. Participants were followed up for mortality until 2011, with an average follow-up of 13 years.
