The Muzaffarpur-TMRC HDSS is a demographic surveillance system that investigates the epidemiological, immunological and genetic determinants of visceral leishmaniasis, a vector-borne infectious disease transmitted by female phlebotomine sandflies that is fatal if left untreated. The study is located in a visceral leishmaniasis-endemic area in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar state (India). In 2008, the study assessed 73,028 individuals living in the 13,674 households of 50 villages. In 2013, this increased to 105,874 individuals in 16,284 households from 66 villages. Since 2008, the study has been conducting update rounds every two months and annual surveys covering all residents in each household.
