Sample details

Nacaps is a multi-cohort panel study that aims to provide data on doctoral candidates and doctorate holders in Germany regarding their study conditions as well as their career trajectories within and outside academia. Nacaps 2018 is the first cohort in which all doctoral candidates registered at 53 higher education institutions entitled to award PhDs/doctorates in Germany as of December 1, 2018, were invited to an initial survey, which took place in 2019. Further panel waves follow at yearly intervals. New cohorts of doctoral students were added to the panel every two years, and starting from 2024, every four years. Each cohort will be surveyed every one to two years, and their career paths will be tracked for up to 15 years after their doctorate.
