The National Seclusion and Restraint Database was created in 2015 to enable reporting on the amount of seclusion and restraint in acute mental health hospital units in Australia. Data coverage is from 2008–09 for seclusion data and from 2015–16 for restraint data. The database is held by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and contains data on seclusion and restraint events, episodes of care, patient days, and episodes with seclusion, for public sector specialised acute mental health hospital services in Australia. The data collection does not include demographic information about people who have been secluded or restrained.
