Sample details

The NDBC was set up prospectively in 1969 when 20,755 married women of reproductive age living in a 12 km2 area of South Delhi were recruited. The cohort included 8,181 live births (8,030 singletons and 151 from twin pairs) from 9,169 pregnancies among these women. The measurements from the babies were recorded within 72 hours of birth (n=7,119) and thereafter 3 monthly up to the age of 12 months (n=4,104) and 6 monthly until the age of 21 years (n=2,892). The first study in adult life was in 1998-2002 at the age of ~30 years. Anthropometry has been measured in the children of the cohort, to study inter-generational changes in height and adiposity.
