The NEDICES study is a longitudinal, population-based survey of the prevalence, incidence, and determinants of major age-associated conditions of the elderly, including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, stroke, and dementia. The study population comprised over 5,000 elderly participants who were 65 years and older, taken from the census of three communities from Central Spain: Las Margaritas, a working-class neighbourhood in Getafe (Greater Madrid); Lista, a professional-class neighbourhood in Salamanca district (Central Madrid); and Arévalo, the agricultural region of Arévalo county. Baseline evaluations occurred in 1994–1995, and follow-up evaluations occurred in 1997–1998.
