The NEFRONA study evaluated atheromatous disease in the carotid and femoral territories in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) without previous cardiovascular disease (CVD). Between 2010 and 2012, the study recruited a total of 2,445 CKD patients, 937 at CKD stage 3,820 at CKD stage 4-5, and 688 on renal replacement therapy (RRT) from hospitals in Spain, as well as 559 control participants without CKD. Participants were assessed at baseline and followed up biannually over a four-year period.
