Sample details

NEPS is a longitudinal, multi-cohort study investigating the development of competencies and educational trajectories of individuals in Germany. NEPS SC6 Adults examines adult education and lifelong learning in a cohort of individuals born between 1944 and 1986, living in private households in Germany. Data were first collected between 2007 and 2008 by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) under the name "Working and Learning in a Changing World" (ALWA). Subsequent data collection has been conducted under the umbrella of NEPS. The cohort is made up of four subsamples: around 7,000 ALWA participants born between 1956 and 1986, a refreshment sample in wave 2 of 2,000 participants born between 1956 and 1986, an enhancement sample in wave 2 of 3,000 participants born between 1944 and 1955, and a refreshment sample in wave 4 of 5,000 participants born between 1944 and 1986. Participants have been followed up annually, with the most recent follow-up conducted in 2023, and plans are in place to continue following them.
