NEPS is a longitudinal, multi-cohort study investigating the development of competencies and educational trajectories of individuals in Germany. Twelve years after the start of the first school cohort of fifth graders (NEPS SC3), NEPS established a second school cohort of fifth graders in German schools (NEPS SC8) to map the effects of changes over the last decade, including social and educational policies. Between 2022 and 2023, NEPS SC8 Grade 5 collected data from approximately 5,600 fifth-grade students, 3,000 parents, 200 school principals or members of the school management team, and 2,500 teachers. Participants have been followed up annually, and the study is ongoing.
