NGHS is an epidemiologic study of 1,213 Black and 1,166 White girls (ages 9 – 10) of risk factors for obesity. NGHS participants are non-institutionalised black and white females ages 9 and 10 at the time of enrolment exam in three clinical centres in the United States of America: University of California, Berkeley; University of Cincinnati and Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Westat, Inc., Rockville, Maryland. The girls were enrolled from primary schools and were assessed annually.
