The NHS II is the second in a series of large prospective cohort studies aimed to investigate the risk factors for major chronic diseases. The sample consists of women who were aged 25 to 42 in 1989, identified through state nursing boards in 14 populous states in the United States of America, with a final cohort of over 100 thousand women. The focus of NHS II is to investigate the effects of oral contraceptives, diet, and lifestyle risk factors, particularly in younger women who started using oral contraceptives during adolescence. NHS participants have been followed up every odd year through questionnaires and other modes of data collection, including biological samples.
