NIDS is the first national household panel study designed to track and understand the shifting face of poverty in South Africa. NIDS began with a sample of 28,000 South Africans from 7,296 households and was able to track and re-interview original sample members as well as anyone the sample members lived with at the time. Data collections for the fifth and final wave took place in 2017 and included a top-up sample to improve representation of white, Indian and high income respondents. In 2020, a special follow up with a subsample of adults from the households interviewed in 2017 was conducted, called the National Income Dynamics Study: Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey (NIDS-CRAM).
