The NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study is a large prospective in-depth study examining the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and cancer risk. From 1995 to 1996, a baseline questionnaire was mailed to current members of the AARP (formally named American Association of Retired Persons) aged 50 to 71 years, who resided in one of six states (California, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Louisiana) or in two metropolitan areas (Atlanta, Georgia and Detroit, Michigan) of the United States of America. Over 567,000 individuals completed the questionnaire. Participants were followed up between 1996 and 1997 and in 2004. Additionally, participants have been followed via linkage to external data.
