Sample details

NL-SH was set up to examine associations of hearing ability with psychosocial, work, and health outcomes in working-age adults in the Netherlands. Recruitment started in 2006, and as of 2023, it is ongoing. Between 1 October 2006 and 1 February 2022, the sample comprised 2,800 adults with normal and impaired hearing, aged between 18 and 70 years at inclusion. Five-year follow-up started in 2011, 10-year follow-up in 2016, and 15-year follow-up in 2021. Additionally, between 20 November 2020 and 12 January 2021, data were collected to study the effects of the COVID-19 restrictions on adults with hearing loss. Hearing ability was measured with an online speech-in-noise test. All other data were collected from questionnaires.
