The NLMS is a comprehensive research program designed to study the effects of socioeconomic factors and demographics on mortality rates across the United States of America (USA). The study began in 1973 and randomly sampled participants from across the USA. Since 1973, 39 cohorts have been included in the program, and participants are followed up periodically. As of 2024, there are 3.8 million records within the NLMS database and 550,000 mortality records.
