The Norwegian ParkWest study is a prospective population-based longitudinal cohort study of individuals with incident Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Western and Southern Norway. The study area comprises the four counties of Sogn and Fjordane, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. The initial cohort comprised of 212 newly-diagnosed and drug-naïve individuals with suspected PD, who were followed with standardised clinical examinations every 6 months. Control subjects who were free from parkinsonism, dementia, major depression, and psychosis were recruited from friends and spouses of individuals with PD. Of the PD cohort, 41.1% were women, and the average age at baseline was 67.9 years.
