The NSFH is a longitudinal study of family life in the United States of America, involving 13,000 participants recruited from 100 sampling areas across the 48 contiguous states. Participants were recruited between 1987 and 1988 using a multi-stage area probability sampling method. The initial cohort consisted of non-institutionalised adults aged 19 and older who spoke English or Spanish, and later waves included their spouses or cohabiting partners. Participants were followed up in two subsequent waves: Wave 2 (1992–1994) and Wave 3 (2001–2003).
