Sample details

The NSHDS consists of three study cohorts in northern Sweden: the Northern Sweden MONICA Study, the Västerbotten Intervention Program (VIP) and the Mammography Screening Program (MSP). In May 2020, over 140,000 participants were enrolled in the NSHDS across the three cohorts and recruitment is ongoing through the VIP and MONICA cohorts. Baseline assessment began in the mid-1980’s for the VIP and MONICA cohorts and in 1995 for the MSP cohort. The studies vary in their sample and follow-up protocol; however all participants are adults living in Northern Sweden and were recruited through healthcare services/registers. The MONICA cohort was assessed mostly through repeated cross-sectional data but the cohorts from 1986 to 1994 did undergo a follow-up assessment in 1999. Further information regarding the cohorts included in the NSHDS can be found on their respective Atlas profiles.
