NUHDSS investigates urbanisation, poverty, and health and demographic outcomes in two slum communities in Kenya. Participants are community dwellers of all ages in Korogocho and Viwandani slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Individuals who migrate into the study areas and stay for a period of at least four continuous months are included in the study. Study participants are considered out-migrants if they reside outside of the study area for a continuous period of four months or 120 nights. At baseline in 2002, over 60,000 participants in 24,000 households were included in the study. As of 31st December 2015, the study included over 66,000 participants in 25,812 households of which around 57% lived in Viwandani. Participants are followed up every four months to collect updated health and demographic data.
