The NWAHS is a population-based cohort study of approximately 4,000 adults recruited from the northern and western regions of Adelaide, South Australia, between 1999 and 2003. Participants were selected from their households, if they had their birthday last and were aged 18 years and over. They were invited for interview and to attend a clinic for a biomedical examination across two phases: Phase 1A (1999-2000) with 2,523 participants and Phase 1B (2002-2003) with 1,537 participants. Since the baseline assessment, all participants have been followed up every 2 to 5 years.
