The NWS was designed to investigate determinants of the occurrence and progression of cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, dementia, and cancer among middle-aged and elderly South Koreans. NWS participants are residents of Namwon city, a representative rural area in Jeonbuk province, South Korea. Over 10,000 participants (4,201 men and 6,466 women) were recruited in the baseline survey between January 2004 and February 2007. The NWS was scheduled to be followed up with repeated examinations at 4-year intervals.
