NYS is a longitudinal study investigating delinquency, substance use, and other problem behaviours in adolescence and adulthood in the United States. Using a multistage sampling strategy, 1,725 youths aged 11-17 years in 1976 and were nationally representative (by gender and race) from randomly selected households across the continental United States took part in the study and were first interviewed in 1976. The follow-up waves occurred in 1977 (NYS 1977), 1978 (NYS 1978), 1979 (NYS 1979), 1980 (NYS 1980), 1983 (NYS 1983), and 1987 (NYS 1987).
