The NYSCS aimed to examine smoking behaviours and quitting patterns among young people in the United States, focusing on factors that influence successful cessation. Beginning in 2003, the study recruited a nationally representative sample of over 2,500 individuals aged 16 to 24 years from all 50 states. Participants were followed over a two-year period, with over 1,200 selected for a 6-month follow-up, and around 1,400 participants completing the 24-month follow-up.
