The overall aim of the OAI is to improve public health through the prevention or alleviation of pain and disability from osteoarthritis (OA). Participants were over 4,700 adults aged 45 to 79 years recruited at study sites across the United States of America, including the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, the Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, and Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island/Brown University. Participants included subs cohorts with symptomatic knee OA at baseline, without OA but at risk for it, and with no OA or known risk factors. Baseline assessment began in 2004 and participants have been followed up every 1 to 2 years for at least 10 years.
