The study participants for pairfam were randomly selected from households across Germany. The participants were chosen based on ages, with one group aged 15 - 17 years at the first wave, one group aged 25 - 27, and one group aged 35 - 37 years. The aim was to interview 4,000 participants from each group, but over 12,400 were interviewed in total during the first wave of data collection. At the first wave, partners of the participants were also interviewed; with children and parents responding to questionnaires in later waves.
