The Perth MONICA study aimed to assess the association between changes in coronary heart disease event rates and changes in the main cardiovascular risk factors. It is one of 41 WHO MONICA Collaborating Centres. The study population was persons aged 25 to 64 years who were normally residents of Perth, Australia. There were 195,417 men and 199,636 women in the study population in 1991. The records of all people in the Perth MONICA register have been linked to all hospital admission records for cardiovascular disease and related deaths in Western Australia from 1980-2005. In addition, three repeated cross-sectional surveys of risk factors were conducted in Perth during the study period: the first in 1983, the second in 1989, and the third in 1994.
