The Phytoner study investigated a possible association between neuro-psychologic performances and long-term exposure to pesticides in vineyard workers in Bordeaux, France, most of whom use fungicides. The study included 929 participants who were recruited from February 1997 to December 1998 from a health insurance system for agricultural workers (MSA). The participants, aged 40 to 55 years in 1995, were required to have worked 1,000 hours or more in agriculture in 1995 and have been affiliated with MSA from 1975 to 1995. They participants were divided into three groups based on pesticide exposure. Men represented two-thirds of non-exposed subjects, about a half of indirectly exposed people, and 98.9% of directly exposed people. The mean age of participants was 50.2 years, and was comparable in the three groups. About 15% of the population were not French - mainly Portuguese, Moroccan, and Spanish.
