PLASTICITY is a prospective longitudinal study of brain development and the effects of adverse pre- and perinatal conditions. The study follows a cohort of 1,196 newborns with one or several pre-defined perinatal risks, such as low birth weight. The newborns were recruited from 22,359 consecutive deliveries between 1971 and 1974 at Kätilöopisto hospital in Helsinki, Finland. A control group of 169 children with no perinatal risks born in the same hospital was also followed from childhood. The risk cohort and their controls have been followed up at 5, 9, 16 and 30 years of age, with waves of data collection planned for ages 40, 50 and 60. Over time, surveys have included self-reports and parents’ and teachers’ questionnaires.
