The PME began in 1980 and aimed to produce monthly indicators on the workforce of people aged 10 or over, in six Brazilian Metropolitan Areas (Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre, which allowed for the assessment of medium- and long-term fluctuations and trends in the metropolitan labour market. The PME employed a rotation scheme of households, where a given household remained in the sample for four consecutive months, was removed from the sample during the following eight-month interval and returned for another four months. Approximately 44,000 households were interviewed per month. The PME ended in March 2016 and was replaced by the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (CNHSS), also known as the Continuous PNAD.
