The PREVEND Study is a prospective, observational cohort study, focused on assessing the impact of elevated urinary albumin loss in non-diabetic subjects on future cardiovascular and renal disease. During the period of 1997 to 1998, all inhabitants of the city of Groningen in the Netherlands aged between 28 and 75 years were asked to answer a short questionnaire and to send in a morning urine sample. A cohort of over 8,500 subjects responded and were therefore recruited into the study. At approximately 3-year intervals, participants are invited for measurements concerning their health status.
