The PSID has been collecting data on income and poverty dynamics in people, families, and neighbourhoods, since 1968. The study originally recruited families from across the United States of America using census lists. All descendants of these families are recruited into the study, including adopted individuals. The PSID had recruited refresher samples of immigrants and people of Latino descent in 1990, 1997, and 2017. At baseline, over 4,800 families comprising around 18,000 individuals from across 40 states were included in the study. As of 2021, over 24,000 individuals from 9,207 families were actively participating in the PSID. The study collected data annually between 1968 and 1997. From 1997 onward, the study has collected data every two years.
