The aim of the PURE study is to examine the impact of urbanisation on the development of primordial risk factors (e.g., physical activity and nutrition changes), primary risk factors (e.g., obesity, hypertension, dysglycemia and dyslipidemia, smoking), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The PURE study is observational in design and has been running for over 20 years thus far. A total of 225,000 household members throughout 27 countries have participated. The participating countries are Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, and Zimbabwe.
