REGICOR began in 1978 as a hospital registry, then in 1995, it established a population-based cohort to investigate cardiovascular (CV) risk factor prevalence and control. The REGICOR cohort includes 11,631 adults from four surveys conducted in 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2018 in the Girona province of North-Eastern Spain. At inclusion, 52% of the study population were females, and the survey cohort's mean ages were 51, 50, 57, and 45 years, respectively. After the initial examination, participants from the 1995, 2000, and 2005 surveys were re-examined in person twice between 2007–2013 and 2017–2022. As of 2025, participants from the 2018 survey have not yet undergone re-examination. Follow-up data on CV events and cause-specific mortality are available for the majority of participants since baseline, with a median follow-up time of 18.6 years.
