RHINE is a population-based cohort study longitudinally examining respiratory symptoms, diseases and environmental exposures in participants from seven Northern European centres (Reykjavik in Iceland, Bergen in Norway, Umeå, Uppsala and Gothenburg in Sweden, Aarhus in Denmark and Tartu in Estonia). The cohort included nearly 22,000 adults born between 1945 and 1973 who had participated in Stage 1 of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) at the seven Nordic study centres between 1990 and 1994. The participants have been followed up in 1999-2001 (RHINE II), 2010-2012 (RHINE III), and 2022-2023 (RHINE IV). Since 2012, the offspring and parents of RHINE participants are being followed up as part of the RHINESSA study.
