The ROAD study is a multi-centre prospective observational study of over 3,000 adults across three cohorts in Japan: an urban cohort in Itabashi, Tokyo; a mountainous cohort in Hidakagawa, Wakayama; and a coastal cohort in Taiji, Wakayama. Participants aged 60 years and above were recruited from the urban region, whilst participants aged 40 years and above were recruited from the mountainous and coastal regions. Invitation letters were distributed to inhabitants included on lists of community-dwelling people. Following baseline examination from October 2005 to March 2007, participants were invited to participate in 3-, 7-, and 10-year follow-ups, with further follow-ups planned at 13- and 17-years.
