Rufiji HDSS was established to evaluate the impact of health system reforms on the burden of disease. The HDSS demographic surveillance area (DSA) encompasses 38 villages in the Rufiji District in Coastal Tanzania. In 1998, the HDSS recruited all individuals of all ages intending to reside in the DSA for at least four months to be included in the study. People who migrated into the DSA after 1998 and remained for at least four months were included in the study, and individuals who left the DSA for more than four months were excluded from the study. As of 2012, Rufiji HDSS included over 100,000 individuals from 19,315 households. Between the baseline sweep in 1998 and 2015, participants in the Rufiji study area were followed up 48 times.
