S4S investigates how genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of alcohol use, substance use, and emotional health problems. The study recruits freshman students entering Virginia Commonwealth University who are at least 18 years old. Over 2,000 students of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds participated in the first data collection in the fall of 2011. The cohort has also invited and followed incoming freshmen during the 2012, 2013, and 2014 years to participate in the study whilst continuing to follow up on the original cohort.
