SALIA aimed to investigate the long-term effects of pollution and other environmental exposures on lung health and mortality. Participants were over 4,700 women aged around 55 years at baseline, recruited from towns in the Ruhr area of Germany. Baseline data collection, including questionnaires and physical assessments, took place from 1985 to 1994. Participants were followed up a number of times: from 2001 to 2003, 2006, and 2007 to 2010. This included questionnaires, physical assessments and mortality data.
