Participants included 1,789 individuals aged 60 to 101 years, residing in five areas of Sacramento: Yolo, Sutter, Solano, San Joaquin, and Placer counties, between 1998 and 1999. The study followed up with participants through semi-annual phone calls and home visits every 12 to 15 months over a span of 10 years, from 1998 to 2008, with 1,094 participants remaining by the end of the study.
