The SAS is a prospective cohort study which aims to enumerate the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among residents aged 60 years and over in an urban community of Shanghai, China. From January 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011, just over 3,000 participants were evaluated by comprehensive epidemiologic, neurologic, and neuropsychological in-person assessments with consensus diagnostic criteria being applied to all participants. Individuals without dementia in the study cohort were actively followed up during 2014-16 using the same procedures.
