The SDR provides data on the characteristics of science, engineering, and health (SEH) doctoral degree holders. It samples people who have earned a doctorate degree in science, engineering, or health in the United States and are less than 76 years of age. The SDR began in 1973 and is conducted every two to three years, with participants receiving follow-up surveys until they turn 76 years old. The overall sample size is over 125,000 as of 2023, and these participants can be linked with other similar datasets through SESTAT: Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System.
