The SENECA study aimed to explore cross-cultural differences in nutrition, lifestyle, health, and performance of elderly European people in a baseline study, and to longitudinally test specific hypotheses of healthy ageing. Participants were born between 1913 and 1918 in 19 towns of 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants across 12 European countries. Baseline data collection was from 1988 to 1989, with over 2,500 participants, and a subset of participants were followed up in 1993 and 1999.
