ShECS follows a cohort of over 5,000 inhabitants aged between 40 and 64 years in the city of Shahroud, Semnan Province, Iran. Participants were first recruited between January 2009 and January 2010, through a cluster random sampling method involving the nine healthcare centres covering the city. Information about households was obtained from electronic databases of the centres.
