SHELS aimed to examine the relationship between a person's ethnic group and several important health issues which affect the Scottish population. Participants include around 91% of the population of Scotland recorded in the 2001 census, around 4.65 million people. Data includes the 2001 census, which has been linked to several health-related databases, including death records, NHS hospitalisation and cancer registers. The study was completed in 2017.
