The Shibata Cohort study aimed to study the risk factors for stroke in a cohort of Japanese adults. In 1977, the study recruited participants aged 40 years or older who had no history of stroke from the Akadani-Ijimino district of Shibata City in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. At baseline, over 2,300 participants were included in the study. Participants underwent annual follow-up examinations for 15 years, from July 1977 to December 1992. Participants were also followed up through medical records.
