The Shirakawa study investigated the factors associated with the development of cerebral stroke and ischaemic heart disease in a Japanese population. Beginning in 1969, the study recruited participants aged 20 to 64 years from Shirakawa Town in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. At baseline, over 6,500 participants were included in the study. Participants were examined in 1969 - 1970, 1971 - 1972, 1973 - 1974 and yearly between 1975 and 1984.
